Hijaamah, Cupping a practice of the Prophet
“…Allaah did not creat a disease without creating a cure therefore.”
(ibn Hibbaan and Al-haakim considerd it to be an authentic hadeeth)
Seeking treatment is of two kinds; treatment of the body which is meant here and that of the soul whose treatment is in what the prophet(saw) has related from his Lord. As for treating the body, some things were narrated from the Prophet(saw) and some were taken from others. The majority of the medical knowledge is derived from experiment.
Let us inquite into some of the ahadeeth of the Rasul(saw) regarding medical treatment.
Usaamah bin Shuraik(ra) narrated that the Rasul(saw) said
“O servants of Allaah! Seek treatment, for Allaah did not creat a disease without creating a cure therefore, except one disease (which is) death.” at-tirmidhee. Al-haakim, and Ibn Khuzaymah considerd it to be an authentic hadeeth narration he said, “Except As-Sa’am” which is death.
The Messenger of Allaah(peace be upon him) urges his nation to seek treatment, He tells them that every disease, old or new, known or unknown, has a cure if Allaah wills. This is also clear from the hadeeth narrated by Jaabir, He narrated that the prophet(saw) said,
“There is a remedy for every disease and when the remedy is applied to the disease it is cured with permission of Allaah, the exalted.” – Muslim.
This hadeeth refers to the fact that a cure is dependent on the permission and will of Allaah.
Medicine can be taken for treating one disease but it causes other diseases. Anas(ra) narrated that the prophet(saw) said,
“Verily, when created the disease, he created the remedy therwith. So seek treatment.” – Ahmad.
One might think that what is meant is searching for a remedy whether it was lawful or unlawful. Yet, the following hadeeth limited searching for a remedy in lawful matters, Abud-Dardaa(ra) narrated that the rasul(saw) said,
“Verily, Allaah made the disease and the cure and he made for each disease cure. So, seek treatment but do not seek it with unlawful(matters).” – Abu Dawood.
Thus Seeking treatment is requited according to islaamic law. Yet, whowhoever was patient and sought only the reward, he would gain it(its not lawful to force him to take treatment even if his was in danger). If he saught treatment, it would be better and it would contradict his reliance on Allaah, for seeking cure is dependent on the will of Allaah as in the hadeeth of Jaabir(permission of Allaah.)
The Companion Ya’mur, father of abu Khuzaymah once said to the messanger of Allaah(saw), “does incantation and remedies we use prevent the destiny of Allaah?”
He said,
“It is amongst the destiny of Allaah, the Exalted.” – Ibnu Majjah
